If you’ve been waiting for the right moment to take that cable car ride up Table Mountain, this might be it.
Cape Town’s most iconic attraction is once again rolling out the welcome mat for locals, and this time, there’s a little extra breathing room. The popular Local Is Lekker ticket special has officially been extended, giving South Africans more time to enjoy one of the country’s most celebrated views without paying full price.
The special, offered by the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company, is designed with locals in mind. It runs from 1 March to 30 April 2026, perfectly timed with the Easter break and school holidays when families are looking for ways to get out and explore.
Ticket prices are significantly reduced. Adults can ride up and down for R250, while children aged four to 17 pay R100. It is a rare chance to experience one of the world’s most photographed landscapes at a more accessible price.
There is just one catch. You need to prove you are South African when booking, so keep your ID handy.
Before you start picturing sunset selfies from the summit, there are a few important rules to keep in mind.
Tickets must be purchased online via Webtickets and cannot be bought on the day of your visit. That means no spontaneous pull ins after brunch in Camps Bay. You need to lock in your plans ahead of time.
There is also limited availability, so leaving it to the last minute could mean missing out entirely. Once the end of April passes, prices go back to normal.
For many locals, Table Mountain is one of those places you promise yourself you will visit again, but rarely do. Between busy schedules and rising costs, it often slips down the list.
That is why this special tends to spark excitement every time it returns. Social media is already buzzing with Capetonians sharing throwback photos and planning group outings. For families especially, it offers a relatively affordable day out during a time when entertainment costs can quickly add up.
It also taps into a growing trend. More South Africans are choosing to explore their own cities rather than travel far, rediscovering landmarks that tourists have long appreciated.
The cableway itself has been part of Cape Town’s story for nearly a century. Since opening in 1929, it has carried more than 33 million visitors to the top of Table Mountain.
And the appeal is not fading anytime soon. The mountain was recently ranked among the most beautiful in the world, placing 14th globally. Not bad for something sitting right in the city’s backyard.
At the summit, you get sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean, the city bowl, and the surrounding mountains. It is the kind of perspective that reminds you why Cape Town consistently ranks among the world’s top travel destinations.
With the cooler months approaching, this extended window might be the last comfortable stretch to enjoy the experience before winter weather starts rolling in.
Whether you are planning a family outing, a date, or just a solo reset above the clouds, the Local Is Lekker special makes a strong case.
Because sometimes, the best travel experiences are not across the world. They are right here at home, waiting for you to look up and go.
