Thailand to Launch Seaplane Routes for Island Hopping Tourists

Thailand is preparing to take its world-famous island tourism to new heights, literally, with the launch of seaplane routes designed to connect travelers with some of the country’s most beautiful and often hard-to-reach destinations.
A New Way to Explore Thailand’s Islands
The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) has confirmed that trials will begin this year, with the first test flights taking off from Koh Kradan in Trang province. This tiny island is already known among backpackers and divers for its turquoise waters and coral reefs, but seaplane access could open it up to a wider audience.
The trial is being run in partnership with two licensed private operators, Siam Seaplane and Thai Seaplane, who are set to test routes, services, and passenger facilities.
From Remote Beaches to Popular Hubs
While the immediate focus is on trial runs, the long-term vision is ambitious. CAAT director Manat Chavanaprayoon said the goal is to eventually roll out a network of passenger terminals and supporting infrastructure across key island destinations. Phuket, one of the most visited islands in Southeast Asia, has already been flagged as a likely hub for future routes.
For travelers, this could mean skipping long ferry rides or multiple domestic connections in favor of direct scenic flights that land right at the water’s edge.
Boosting Tourism and Local Economies
Thailand’s economy has long relied on tourism, and with the sector bouncing back after global travel disruptions, the government is looking for ways to stand out in a competitive regional market. Seaplanes could give Thailand an edge by making it easier for visitors to explore smaller, lesser-known islands that often miss out on the tourism boom enjoyed by hotspots like Phuket or Koh Samui.
Local tourism operators have reacted with optimism, noting that easier access could spread visitor spending beyond the traditional tourist hubs and benefit community businesses on smaller islands.
Social Media Buzz
The announcement has already sparked chatter online. Travelers on X and Instagram shared excitement over the idea of landing on the water with hashtags like #ThailandSeaplane and #IslandHopping. Some noted that while seaplanes are common in places like the Maldives and Canada, seeing them in Thailand would add a new layer of adventure to their holidays. Others raised concerns about ticket prices, with many hoping the routes won’t only cater to luxury travelers.
A Fresh Take on Thai Island Adventures
Thailand’s beaches and islands have always been a magnet for travelers, but this initiative signals a shift in how the country is preparing for its tourism future. If successful, seaplanes could redefine the island-hopping experience, offering not just convenience but an unforgettable way to see the country’s coastline from the sky and sea.
