Crowds expected as judgment looms in Joshlin Smith trial

The Western Cape High Court is set to deliver judgment on Friday in the case involving the disappearance of six-year-old Joshlin Smith, who vanished from her home in Saldanha Bay in February.

The verdict will be announced at the White City Multipurpose Centre in Diazville, where Judge Nathan Erasmus is expected to preside over a packed courtroom due to intense public interest in the case.

Joshlin’s disappearance on 19 February 2024 triggered a massive search and prompted national attention. Her mother, Racquel “Kelly” Smith, her boyfriend Jacquen “Boeta” Appollis, and their friend Steveno “Steffie” van Rhyn are all facing charges of kidnapping and human trafficking. All three have pleaded not guilty.

The trial officially started on 3 March and concluded with closing arguments on Wednesday. Judge Erasmus has cautioned that, while the case has attracted political interest and public emotion, only the families of the accused and the child will be prioritised for seating — no political figures will receive special accommodation.

Two other individuals were also linked to the case earlier on. Charges against one were dropped, while another became a State witness during the investigation.

Residents and search volunteers are expected to attend the judgment, marking a critical moment in a case that has gripped communities across the Western Cape.
