R1.6m Aircraft Component Theft Ends in Prison Time for OR Tambo Suspect

A man found guilty of stealing a vital aircraft safety component from South African Airways (SAA) has been sentenced to ten years in prison for a major breach of aviation security.
Emmanuel Mdakane, 44, was given a 10-year prison sentence by the Kempton Park Magistrates’ Court on Thursday for stealing a Traffic Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) processor, a crucial tool for preventing collisions in midair. The equipment, valued at over R1.6 million, was stolen from OR Tambo International Airport between January and February of 2018 and was never found.
By warning pilots of potential airborne hazards, the TCAS processor helps to ensure the safety of both passengers and crew. Its disappearance put countless lives at risk in addition to exposing a serious weakness in aviation security.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) claims that Mdakane sold the stolen device for R340,000 but only gave R40,000 back. An investigation was started after the buyer finally reported the fraud.
“Junior State Advocate Siyabonga Futshana provided convincing proof that revealed the defendant’s deceit. According to NPA spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane, the court dismissed his defense as implausible.
Under the direction of Sergeant Mphephu Mabogo, the investigation followed the transaction’s financial trail and contributed to the development of a strong case. The court’s conclusion that Mdakane’s actions were harmful and intentional served to highlight how serious economic crimes involving state entities are.
The NPA applauded the successful cooperation between investigators and prosecutors and welcomed the court’s ruling. This result demonstrates our resolute position against economic crimes. “Those who misuse public resources will face consequences,” Mjonondwane continued.
The decision highlights the legal system’s dedication to maintaining public safety and the rule of law and sends a clear message about the repercussions of tampering with aviation infrastructure.
