Man accused of HIV deception remains behind bars

A 47-year-old Boschkop man accused of deliberately misleading his partner about his HIV status and infecting her is expected back in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court next month, where proceedings will continue as the State finalises information relating to bail.

The accused appeared before the court earlier this week on a charge of attempted murder and remains in custody. Details of the case were first reported by Smile FM, which noted that the matter has been postponed until 3 August for the collection of bail information.

According to National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Regional Spokesperson for the Gauteng Division in Pretoria, Lumka Mahanjana, the man and the complainant, 38, were in a relationship between October 2025 and June 2026.

Mahanjana said the woman allegedly believed her partner was HIV negative after he had represented himself as such. As highlighted in the NPA’s account of the case, she reportedly found antiretroviral (ARV) medication in his bag on 26 June 2026 and confronted him about it.

The spokesperson alleged that the accused then admitted he was HIV positive and told the complainant that he had intentionally infected her because he did not want her to be with anyone else.

The complainant later underwent an HIV test at a medical facility last week on 25 July, where she was informed that the result was positive.

“The following day, she reported the matter to the police. The accused was subsequently arrested on the same day at their place of residence,” Mahanjana stated.

Police arrested the suspect after the complaint was lodged, and he has remained in custody pending his next court appearance.

The allegations against the accused have not yet been tested in court. He is expected to appear before the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court again next week on 3 August, when the matter returns for further proceedings.
