How Siya Kolisi and his seasoned Sharks squad are rallying for a do-or-die semi against the Bulls, with grit, growth, and no fear of drama.

The Sharks aren’t coming to Pretoria to play it safe. With a ticket to the United Rugby Championship final on the line, Siya Kolisi and his Durban-based teammates are digging deep, not just into their game plan, but into the tough lessons of a season shaped by grit and guts.

Their semi-final clash with the Bulls this Saturday isn’t just another match. It’s an all-South African blockbuster that promises everything from bruising scrums to heart-pounding moments. And if last week’s cliffhanger against Munster is anything to go by, Kolisi is all for the chaos.

“I’ve never been in a game like that before,” the Springbok skipper admitted, referring to the penalty shootout that decided their quarterfinal after 100 minutes of deadlocked rugby. “It was amazing for rugby.”

Sharks Steeled by a Season of Close Calls

The Sharks arrive at Loftus Versfeld as underdogs on paper. But paper doesn’t tell the full story. While the Bulls wrapped up second place in the regular season with some commanding wins, they’ve consistently stumbled against the Sharks, both home and away. Those stumbles aren’t by accident.

According to Kolisi, this squad is different from the Sharks teams of the past. “In previous years, we would’ve lost that game against Munster,” he said. “But now, everyone’s stepping up. You can feel the growth in this team.”

It’s that evolution, both mental and tactical, that could make the difference against a Bulls side known for their physicality, discipline, and depth.

Bulls Have Brawn, But Sharks Have Battle-Hardened Boks

Loftus won’t be welcoming any tourists on Saturday. The altitude, crowd, and an in-form Bulls pack will test the Sharks up front, and Kolisi knows it.

“They’ve probably got the best scrum in the URC right now,” he conceded. Lineouts, mauls, and breakdowns will be the battlegrounds. But with veterans like Eben Etzebeth, Lukhanyo Am, and Andre Esterhuizen in their corner, the Sharks have the firepower to match, and maybe outfox, the Bulls.

Head coach John Plumtree has the rare luxury of calling on multiple World Cup winners who’ve been through rugby’s most intense pressure cookers. And Kolisi believes it’s this experience that’s helped the younger players rise to the occasion this season.

“We’re confident, but grounded,” he added. “We know how good the Bulls are, especially at home. But our focus stays on ourselves.”

South Africa’s URC Rivalry Heats Up

Fans have been buzzing on social media about the prospect of an all-SA final, and Saturday’s semi is being hyped as one of the most significant domestic matchups in recent memory.

Loftus is already sold out, and the air around Pretoria is thick with anticipation. With passionate fan bases, no love lost between the franchises, and national pride on the line, it’s more than a semi. It’s a statement.

Kolisi and company aren’t just chasing silverware, they’re chasing respect, momentum, and a shot at making history in a league that’s fast becoming a proving ground for South African rugby’s next chapter.
