‘The Devil Was Among Us’: Fleurhof in Shock as Mother Charged in Jayden-Lee Meek Murder

A mother weeps in the dock. Outside, a community mourns and rages.
The suburb of Fleurhof, west of Johannesburg, has been left reeling after the shocking arrest of Tiffany Meek, the mother of murdered child Jayden-Lee Meek. On Monday, she appeared at the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court for the first time, facing charges for her own son’s killing.
What was once a united front of neighbours seeking justice has splintered into disbelief and anger. Many of those who protested in the name of Jayden-Lee now say they unknowingly stood beside the very person accused of taking his life.
“We shouted for justice, while she stood with us”
Thandi Khambule, one of the residents who spent days outside the local police station demanding answers, voiced the heartbreak felt by many.
“We were shouting at police. We were lighting candles. We were fighting to find Jayden’s killer. But the devil was among us,” she said outside court. “She must not get bail. She must rot in jail.”
Meek, 31, reportedly broke down in tears during her court appearance. Her matter has been postponed to Friday for bail proceedings.
Khambule, who lived in the same complex as the Meek family, said Jayden-Lee was a gentle, humble child. For her and others, the betrayal cuts deeply.
“I warned everyone; we were in for a shock”
Neil Singh, a well-known local activist and philanthropist who personally covered the cost of Jayden’s funeral, said he felt a grim sense of confirmation.
“At the funeral, I said we were going to be shocked when the truth came out,” Singh recalled. “I had a feeling, but hoped I was wrong.”
Singh, along with many Fleurhof residents, says trust within the community has been shaken. What was once a united outpouring of grief has been overshadowed by feelings of betrayal.
Police say more arrests may follow
Police Deputy Minister Polly Boshielo addressed media outside the courthouse, stating that the murder investigation had been challenging but thorough.
“Jayden was killed in a space where he should have felt safe. His home. This was not an easy case,” Boshielo explained. “We received backlash over the delay, but detectives had to build a case that would hold in court.”
She also confirmed that further arrests are expected, though no additional suspects have yet been named publicly.
A community in mourning, now betrayed
For Fleurhof, this story has evolved from one of tragedy to one of horror. A child was lost, and now it seems the person accused of ending his life was standing right beside his mourners.
Jayden-Lee’s story has stirred pain far beyond Gauteng. In a country all too familiar with the scourge of child abuse and domestic violence, this case serves as a gut-wrenching reminder: not every monster hides in the shadows.
“We weren’t just crying for Jayden. We were fighting for him,” said Khambule. “And we never imagined who we were really fighting against.”
