Daughter of Alleged Hitman Joins Tebogo Thobejane Attempted Murder Case

Nthabiseng Nzama’s arrest weaves a deeper thread through a tangled web of violence and organised crime in Gauteng.
It was a quiet Monday morning when Nthabiseng Nzama, just 23 years old, stood before the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court. Unlike the typical court appearances that make up the daily rhythm of the courtroom, hers sent ripples far beyond its walls. Nzama has officially been named the fifth suspect in the attempted murder case of actress and former Muvhango star Tebogo Thobejane. But her alleged role adds more than just another face to the docket — it potentially cracks open a larger syndicate tied to some of the country’s most high-profile crimes.
Who Is Nthabiseng Nzama?
Nzama is no ordinary name on the charge sheet. According to prosecutors, she’s the daughter of one of the suspected hitmen linked to the assassination of beloved musician DJ Sumbody, whose real name was Oupa John Sefoka. Nzama faces money laundering charges, accused of transferring funds between accounts while allegedly knowing they were proceeds of crime. She was granted bail at R10,000, but her presence in this saga suggests the rabbit hole goes even deeper.
How Is This Linked to DJ Sumbody’s Murder?
Back in November 2022, DJ Sumbody and his two bodyguards, Sibusiso Mokoena and Sandile Myeza, were gunned down in Woodmead. It was an assassination that shocked South Africa’s entertainment industry and sent a chilling message, even celebrity status doesn’t shield you from the violence in Joburg’s underworld.
Now, police have connected the suspects in his murder to a slew of other crimes, including the attempted hit on Thobejane, which took place in Morningside. The actress’s car was riddled with bullets while she was inside with her friend and driver. Miraculously, Thobejane survived, though she was left traumatised and treated for shock at Life Fourways Hospital.
A Network of Violence
The State alleges that this isn’t just a string of unrelated attacks, it’s a coordinated campaign tied to a wider criminal enterprise. Three men believed to be hired hitmen, Michael Pule Tau, Musa Kekana, and Tiego Floyd Mabusela — are already in custody. They’re facing three counts of murder, as well as charges of unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition. Also behind bars is Katiso Molefe, a 61-year-old businessman accused of masterminding the DJ Sumbody killing.
Add to this mix the controversial businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and his wife Tsakani, also implicated in the Thobejane attack, and it paints a disturbing picture of organised crime operating with chilling coordination.
Social Media Buzz and Public Response
On social media, users were quick to react to the revelations. “It’s like something out of a gangster movie,” one user tweeted. Others voiced concern over the apparent ease with which money and violence seem to flow among Joburg’s elite. Some questioned how long these networks have been operating under the radar, and whether there are still more high-profile targets at risk.
All eyes are now on August 26, when Nzama and her co-accused will return to court. For now, she walks free on bail, while Molefe and the other suspects remain behind bars. The unfolding case has exposed what may be a dangerous convergence of business, entertainment, and underworld interests in Gauteng.
As more details come to light, one thing is clear: the story of Tebogo Thobejane’s near-death experience is no longer just about a single attack. It’s about an alleged criminal empire that’s slowly coming undone.
