Police in Johannesburg arrested over 450 people during a sweeping three-day crime crackdown, targeting drunk driving, violent offences, and other serious crimes.

From July 18 to 20, joint law enforcement teams rolled out high-density operations across the city as part of a coordinated safety blitz. The arrests stemmed from several strategic efforts, including Operation Shanela 2, station commanders’ operations, roadblocks, and ad hoc deployments.

Operation Shanela 2, carried out in the Eldorado Park policing precinct, accounted for 77 arrests alone. An additional 94 people were taken into custody during station-led operations across Johannesburg’s various police stations.

High-density deployments netted another 34 suspects, while 23 individuals were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Authorities say these operations form part of ongoing efforts to curb crime hotspots and restore public confidence in law enforcement.

“The coordinated success of these operations sends a strong message to offenders,” a police spokesperson said. “We are reclaiming our streets.”

More police crackdowns are expected in the coming weeks as the SAPS continues its drive to clean up Johannesburg’s most affected districts.
