A routine traffic patrol in Rustenburg ended in tragedy after a 41-year-old traffic officer was allegedly struck and killed by a driver suspected of being under the influence of alcohol.

Provincial Inspector Rendani Maluta was carrying out his duties with fellow officers on Tuesday, 3 November, when he attempted to stop a bakkie that had reportedly ignored several stop signs along Bophuthatswana Street towards Meriting, near the R510.

Instead of stopping, the vehicle allegedly struck Maluta with its front right fender before the driver fled the scene.

His colleagues immediately pursued the vehicle, with assistance from the police. The suspect was eventually apprehended and reportedly found to be drunk.

Officer remembered for 14 years of service

Maluta was stationed at the Rustenburg Provincial Traffic Station, where he served as a Provincial Inspector for 14 years.

His death has sent shockwaves through the North West Department of Community Safety and Transport Management, particularly as traffic officers prepare for increased activity on the roads during the festive season.

MEC Tsotso Tlhapi visited the scene and extended her condolences to Maluta’s family, friends and colleagues.

She described his death as a devastating loss, particularly at a time when road safety efforts require greater visibility and commitment from traffic officials.

Tlhapi also praised the officers and police who responded quickly and helped secure the suspect’s arrest.

While the arrest is an important step towards accountability, the MEC stressed that it would not undo the loss of a dedicated officer.

Festive season road safety under the spotlight

The incident has brought renewed attention to the dangers traffic officers face while enforcing road regulations, as well as the consequences of irresponsible driving.

With the festive season getting underway, authorities are expected to increase their presence on major routes as more motorists travel to visit family, attend events and enjoy holiday breaks.

Tlhapi urged road users to act responsibly, obey traffic regulations and avoid driving under the influence of alcohol.

The suspect is expected to appear before the Tlhabane Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 5 November 2026.
