The conservation world mourns FC Conradie after fatal elephant encounter in the Western Cape

What began as a typical Tuesday morning at Gondwana Private Game Reserve quickly turned into heartbreak. FC Conradie, the 39-year-old CEO and co-owner of the reserve, was fatally trampled by an elephant on July 22, sending shockwaves through South Africa’s conservation community.

Conradie wasn’t just the man in charge — he was the heart of the Mossel Bay-based reserve. Known for his hands-on approach and deep commitment to wildlife preservation, his death has left colleagues, friends, and wildlife advocates across the country reeling.

What Happened on That Fateful Morning?

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Kappie Kapp confirmed the fatal incident took place around 8am. Details remain scarce, but early reports indicate that Conradie was on-site when an elephant charged and fatally trampled him. Despite efforts by emergency responders, he was declared dead at the scene.

As a safety precaution, the elephant has been relocated from the area while an official investigation is underway. Police have opened an inquest docket, and the reserve has refrained from commenting on whether safety protocols were in place or followed at the time.

A Nation Mourns a Conservation Hero

Tributes have flooded social media, painting a picture of a man who lived and breathed conservation. One post from fellow conservationist Andries Erwee on the group “Kalahari-Vasbyt” recalled how Conradie generously supported reforestation efforts:

“He made a difference in people’s lives and in conservation.”

A family spokesperson described the loss as “heartbreaking,” urging the public to respect the family’s privacy and avoid speculation while investigations continue. “This was a tragedy, and everyone who knew him is dealing with an unimaginable loss,” they said.

A Dangerous, Beautiful Calling

Conradie’s passing is a stark reminder of the risks that come with protecting South Africa’s wild spaces. Working closely with animals like elephants — revered for their intelligence and strength — carries real danger. Although generally non-aggressive, elephants can become unpredictable under stress or when they feel threatened, according to wildlife experts at SANParks and the Endangered Wildlife Trust.

Gondwana, home to the Big Five and hailed for its eco-tourism and rehabilitation efforts, is no stranger to the delicate balance between tourism, wildlife safety, and conservation.

Legacy Beyond Loss

For many, FC Conradie’s death feels personal — a gut punch to South Africa’s conservation movement. He wasn’t just managing a reserve. He was championing a future where humans and wildlife coexist with respect and understanding.

His legacy now lives in every tree planted, every endangered animal protected, and every visitor who walks away from Gondwana with a deeper appreciation for nature.
