Limpopo Man Accused of Running Over Ex-Girlfriend and Baby in Chilling Act of Rage

A shocking case of domestic rage leaves South Africans horrified and a village reeling
South Africans are once again grappling with the horror of violence rooted in broken relationships and unchecked rage. In Limpopo, a man is set to appear in court this week after allegedly mowing down his ex-girlfriend and her baby daughter with his vehicle, a brutal act that left the child dead and her mother seriously injured.
The incident unfolded just after sunset on Friday in Segopye village, a quiet rural community that is now the scene of a haunting tragedy. The mother, standing by the roadside with her 13-month-old baby in her arms, was reportedly waiting for a taxi when her ex-boyfriend pulled up. What started as a verbal confrontation quickly escalated into a chilling sequence of events.
According to police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, the woman and her baby managed to get into a taxi. But as they made their way toward Marothi Cross, a common drop-off point for locals, the driver noticed something alarming: a van was following them closely. It was her ex.
Moments after they stepped out of the taxi, the man allegedly accelerated and ran them over with his bakkie. He didn’t stop.
Baby dies, mother survives with injuries
The baby girl was rushed to Mankweng Hospital, but it was too late. She succumbed to her injuries. Her mother, though alive, is recovering from serious leg injuries. The trauma, however, goes far deeper than broken bones.
Police confirmed that the suspect, 35, was arrested shortly after the incident. He is expected to face charges of murder and attempted murder.
Due to legal constraints, his identity remains undisclosed until his first court appearance.
A symptom of a deeper crisis
This tragic event isn’t an isolated case, it’s a painful reminder of South Africa’s ongoing struggle with gender-based violence and intimate partner attacks. Social media has erupted in outrage, with #JusticeForBabyGirl trending by Saturday morning.
“This is not just GBV, this is terrorism,” tweeted one activist. “That poor woman will carry the trauma of losing her baby in this way for life. We need stricter enforcement and better protection for women leaving violent relationships.”
Community members in Limpopo have also spoken out, calling for greater police visibility and swift justice.
Not the first time love turned lethal
Just last year, the North West High Court handed down a life sentence to 64-year-old Maseiso Clementinah Kokama, who orchestrated the murder of her ex’s new lover out of jealousy. Alongside her were two co-conspirators, one of them a hired hitman. The court heard that Kokama could not cope with the end of her relationship and took revenge in the most cold-blooded way.
That murder and this latest act in Limpopo are two sides of the same terrifying coin: failed relationships spilling into deadly violence, often with women and children paying the price.
The man accused in this latest case will appear in a Limpopo court today. As the legal process begins, one thing is certain: South Africa is watching. And many are asking, again, what it will take to stop this cycle of violence.
As the community prepares to bury a baby taken too soon, the rest of the country must confront the difficult truths that tragedies like this expose.
