Husband Among Suspects Arrested in Chilling KwaDukuza Murder Case

A quiet town shaken by betrayal, violence and a chilling discovery
In the early hours of June 27, a tragic scene unfolded on Zinkwazi Link Road in KwaDukuza, KwaZulu-Natal. Inside a vehicle, the lifeless body of 31-year-old Nokulunga Happiness Mashabane was found, a fatal gunshot wound to her head ending her life and sending her community into stunned silence.
What followed was a month-long manhunt that combined the tenacity of SAPS investigators with the support of private security and forensic experts. And now, in a development that has left residents reeling, one of the two suspects arrested on July 30 is believed to be Nokulunga’s own husband.
A Love Turned Lethal
Nokulunga, a KwaDukuza Municipality employee, was known for her warmth and professionalism. Her sudden death not only devastated colleagues and family but also raised painful questions in a country already grappling with high rates of gender-based violence.
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed that two men, aged 32 and 26, had been taken into custody. They’re due to appear in the KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court on Friday, August 1. While police have not officially named the suspects, community sources close to the investigation say one of them is the victim’s spouse.
It’s a revelation that has shattered the illusion of safety within homes. Major General Anthony Gopaul, Acting Deputy National Commissioner for Crime Detection, did not mince his words. “It is heartbreaking when those meant to love and protect women become monsters who snatch away their lives and futures,” he said.
“Justice for Happiness”: A Town Demands Answers
On social media, the hashtag #JusticeForHappiness has begun trending among locals. Many are calling for not just swift prosecution, but for systemic change in how cases of intimate partner violence are handled.
“This isn’t just a murder case,” tweeted one user. “It’s another name on a growing list of women silenced by people they trusted.”
South Africa remains plagued by high rates of femicide. According to the SAPS 2023/24 crime stats, a woman is murdered every three hours in the country, most often by someone she knows. Nokulunga’s death now joins a long list of tragedies that highlight a painful pattern.
From Grief to Grit: Investigators Commended
While the community grieves, there is some solace in the swift and effective response by authorities. Major General Gopaul praised the joint effort of SAPS detectives, forensic analysts, and KwaDukuza’s E2 private security partners. “The arrest is a testament to solid investigative work and good crime scene management,” he said.
Yet even amid commendation, Gopaul acknowledged the deeper crisis. “We can only truly honour her life by fighting the culture of violence that enabled her death,” he added.
A Final Goodbye
Nokulunga Happiness Mashabane will be remembered as more than just a victim. She was a daughter, a public servant, a neighbour, and a woman with dreams, suddenly taken too soon. As her killers prepare to face court, KwaDukuza and the nation at large confront a truth that is both devastating and far too familiar: the most dangerous place for many women is still their own home.
And for Nokulunga, love wasn’t enough to save her. It may have been what betrayed her.
