Bullets, Ballistics, and Bail: The DJ Sumbody Case Just Got Deeper

Nearly three years after the brutal assassination of beloved amapiano artist DJ Sumbody, the man suspected of orchestrating the hit, Katiso “KT” Molefe, is back in the spotlight as his high-stakes court battle resumes in Johannesburg.
Molefe appeared in the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 6 August 2025, where he is expected to apply for bail. His three co-accused, Musa Kekana, Michael Pule Tau, and Floyd Mabusela, have opted not to seek bail, and all four remain in custody.
The case has stirred deep public interest, not just for the star power involved but for the chilling revelation by police that the same AK-47 rifle was used in four separate killings across Gauteng.
The Killings That Shocked Mzansi
Oupa John Sefoka, known to fans as DJ Sumbody, was gunned down in November 2022 in a shocking drive-by shooting in Woodmead. Two of his bodyguards, Sibusiso Mokoena and Sandile Myeza, were also killed in the attack.
Now, investigators believe the same suspects may be behind three other assassinations:
-
DJ Vintos (real name Hector Buthelezi) was murdered in March 2022 outside a nightclub in Orlando East.
-
Don Tindleni was shot dead on the N1 near the N17 off-ramp in March 2023 while driving his BMW.
-
Armand Swart was killed in April 2024, in what is believed to have been a mistaken identity case.
According to SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, all four killings were carried out using the same AK-47, and in Swart’s case, three pistols found on the scene were also linked to the other murders through ballistic evidence.
A Pattern of Violence
Each of the victims was ambushed and sprayed with bullets, a deadly pattern that raised red flags for investigators.
“Not only do we have ballistic reports linking the weapons,” Mathe told the media, “but we also have other overwhelming evidence tying the accused to these murders.”
This case isn’t just about a fallen music icon. It has cracked open what seems to be a coordinated campaign of contract-style killings involving high-powered firearms and well-planned executions.
Public Reaction: Frustration and Fatigue
Across social media, South Africans continue to express anger over the violence that has claimed the lives of several well-known figures.
One tweet read, “Another artist gone. Another bail application. The streets aren’t safe for anyone with success anymore.”
The case has become a symbol of broader frustrations around violent crime in the country, especially when it touches the entertainment world.
What’s Next in the Case?
Molefe is widely suspected to be the mastermind behind the coordinated hits, though no official motive has been confirmed.
His bail application could signal a long legal battle ahead, as prosecutors continue to piece together evidence linking the accused to what appears to be a web of targeted killings.
For the families of the victims, fans, and a shaken industry, the road to justice has already felt far too long.
