CCTV shows armed hijacking outside Durban primary school; vehicle later found in KwaMashu

CCTV footage captured an armed hijacking outside SRS Primary School in Overport, Durban, while a man was dropping his children off, according to IOL. The footage and reports show the incident unfolded in full view of children and other schoolgoers.

How the hijacking played out

According to IOL, the armed suspects arrived in a silver Renault Triber, approached an Audi and threatened the driver with a firearm. The men ordered the driver out of his vehicle and took the car.

The CCTV shows several men alight from a vehicle parked beside the Audi. One man reaches into the driver’s window while another opens the back door and pulls two children from the rear seat. Other children stood at the school entrance and watched as the robbers surrounded the family’s car.

Nearby school activity and witnesses

Both the footage and IOL’s report note that a minibus taxi arrived and offloaded schoolchildren beside the scene, apparently unaware that an armed hijacking was taking place alongside them.

Vehicle recovery and police response

According to IOL, Zain Soosiwala of Secure SA private security said the hijacked Audi was tracked to KwaMashu and was found with the interior stripped and damaged. IOL also reported that a case of carjacking was opened at Mayville SAPS.

“The victim had parked his vehicle outside a school on West Road when suspects accosted him and robbed him of his vehicle and cellphones,” Lieutenant-Colonel Paul Magwaza said.

The CCTV recording provides clear visual evidence of the incident and will be part of the ongoing investigation, according to the IOL report. The footage and the recovery of the vehicle in KwaMashu underline continuing concerns about vehicle-related crimes in the region.
