Violence Erupts at Oudtshoorn Prison, Leaving One Dead and Several Hurt

A routine search at Oudtshoorn Medium A Correctional Centre turned deadly this week, with one inmate losing his life and several prison officials injured during a violent confrontation.

The clash unfolded after officials conducted a search in Room 005 of A-Section, a known hotspot of unrest. According to Singabakho Nxumalo, spokesperson for the Department of Correctional Services, inmates refused to cooperate, sparking tension and resistance that escalated quickly.

Officials eventually regained control, confiscating cellphones, narcotics, and other contraband. However, the unrest didn’t end there. The following day, during the routine unlock time, inmates launched a coordinated attack on prison staff.

Officials Sustain Stab Wounds as Tensions Boil Over

Eighteen officials were present during the attack, with four suffering serious stab wounds to the face, head, and back. Despite medical attention, one inmate caught in the violence died from his injuries.

National Commissioner Makgothi Samuel Thobakgale expressed deep concern over the incident, stating that safety for both staff and inmates remains the Department’s top priority.

In the aftermath, the prison intensified security measures. Those involved in the attack were isolated in single cells, and A-Unit was thoroughly re-searched, uncovering more weapons.
