Young Minds Shine as Social Sciences Steals the Show at Eskom Expo Eden Karoo

At the George Civic Centre, a place usually reserved for community gatherings, the spotlight this past weekend fell on some of the region’s youngest and brightest scientific thinkers. The Eskom Expo Eden Karoo Regional Science Fair brought together 74 learners from across the district, and while Engineering and Environmental Studies drew impressive displays, it was Social Sciences that unexpectedly dominated the floor with 17 thought-provoking projects.

A celebration of curiosity and courage

From Grade 4 pupils just dipping their toes into research, to high schoolers eyeing international science stages, the energy inside the venue was unmistakable. Teachers, parents, and proud grandparents filled the hall, many cheering as medals were handed out 12 Gold, five Silver, and 16 Bronze in total.

Local educators described the atmosphere as “electric,” with many projects tackling issues that matter in the Eden Karoo context: social cohesion, community development, and environmental sustainability. “Our learners didn’t just present experiments; they presented solutions,” one parent noted on social media after the awards ceremony.

Recognising excellence

Eskom and its partners handed out special awards that highlighted both talent and innovation:

  • Best Female Award: Izelke Conradie & Sarai Roos (Punt High, Grade 10)

  • Best Innovation: Heinrich Conradie (Outeniqua High, Grade 11)

  • Best Energy Project: Joël Oosthuizen & Jonathan Van Wyk (Punt High, Grade 11)

  • Best Development Project: Linathi Koyana (Murray High, Grade 9)

These winners now have a chance to showcase their work at the Eskom Expo International Science Fair, where learners from across South Africa and even beyond compete on a global stage.

Why Social Sciences matters here

That Social Sciences topped the entry list may surprise some, but in a region grappling with inequality, environmental change, and cultural diversity, learners are reflecting the issues closest to home. “This is science with a heart,” said one judge, explaining how many projects were less about gadgets and more about people.

Eskom Expo organisers noted that the event continues to be about more than competition. It’s about opening pathways for young people into careers in science, technology, and engineering, while also ensuring rural and township schools are not left behind.

Looking ahead

For the Eden Karoo, this science fair has become more than just a calendar event it’s a reminder that the next generation is already thinking critically about the future. As Eskom Development Foundation Acting CEO, Mologadi Motshele, put it: “Inclusion and transformation are at the heart of this initiative. These learners are proof that talent doesn’t have a postcode.”

With the international fair around the corner, all eyes now turn to the medal winners but for many families in George and surrounding towns, the real victory has already been won: young people daring to imagine a better tomorrow.
