Three Mpumalanga cops arrested for allegedly killing motorist after crash

Three police officers have been arrested for their alleged role in the death of a motorist after a multiple-vehicle crash in Embalenhle, Mpumalanga. The arrests were made on Monday.

Motorist dies after assault

Police said the incident happened on 17 August when one of the motorists involved in the crash tried to flee the scene on foot.

The officers chased him down and allegedly assaulted him with stones. The injured man was later taken to hospital by ambulance, where he died hours later.

Arrests confirmed

Provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli confirmed the arrests following a joint investigation by SAPS detectives and the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).

“Three SAPS members, aged between 32 and 35, have been arrested in connection with the case,” Mdhluli said.

The officers are facing charges of murder and defeating the ends of justice. They are expected to appear in the Evander Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 26 August 2025.

Police response

Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi condemned the actions of the officers.

“This arrest of the three SAPS members demonstrates our commitment to defending the name of the SAPS. Our Code of Conduct clearly states how members should conduct themselves and never betray the trust entrusted in them. The law will take its course, and no one is above the law,” Mkhwanazi said.

Oversight by IPID

Mdhluli added that SAPS will continue working with IPID to ensure transparency in the investigation.
