Brackendowns officers face disciplinary process after viral video

SAPS has launched an internal disciplinary process after footage from Brackendowns police station circulated online.

SAPS officers at Brackendowns police station in Ekurhuleni are facing an internal disciplinary process after footage appeared to show members refusing to assist a member of the public with an affidavit, according to a response shared by Yusuf Abramjee and information from SAPS.

The video, which circulated on social media on Saturday, 15 August, shows a man seeking assistance with an affidavit linked to his lost identity document and the certification of copies.

The footage prompted criticism online, with some viewers questioning the officers’ conduct and manner of dealing with the member of the public.

SAPS identifies officers in viral footage

Acting Ekurhuleni District Commissioner Brigadier David Ngcobo has since identified the members shown in the video.

According to SAPS, the matter is being addressed internally and the officers involved will face the appropriate disciplinary processes.

Ngcobo condemned the conduct depicted in the footage and reminded members that police are expected to serve the public with professionalism, courtesy and respect.

The response comes as interactions between police officials and members of the public continue to attract scrutiny when videos filmed at stations or during police operations circulate online.

SAPS encourages members of the public to report service delivery complaints involving its members through the National Complaints Service Centre on 0800 333 177. Gauteng residents can also contact the provincial service complaints standby line on 082 442 2000.

The investigation and internal disciplinary process will determine what action is taken against the officers involved.
