EFF Slams AfriForum Over Malema Dossier Sent to White House

AfriForum takes its campaign abroad
AfriForum has intensified its campaign against Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema by submitting a dossier on him to senior members of Donald Trump’s administration. The file, which the group also released publicly earlier this month, details allegations of incitement, corruption and links to extremist rhetoric.
According to AfriForum, the dossier provides a framework for international consequences such as targeted sanctions, which they believe are necessary because local authorities have failed to act. Werner Human, a member of AfriForum’s board, personally handed the document to US officials.
Ernst van Zyl, AfriForum’s head of public relations, confirmed the group intends to keep up pressure both at home and abroad. He added that Washington has already expressed concern over Malema’s use of chants such as “Kill the Boer” and has asked the South African government to condemn the slogan.
EFF raises alarm over safety
The EFF has fiercely criticised AfriForum’s move, arguing that it puts Malema’s life in danger. Party MP Naledi Chirwa claimed on X: “They want him assassinated.” Fellow member Babalwa Mathulelwa described the dossier as an attempt by the powerful to block Malema’s push for economic freedom.
The accusations add fuel to a long-running feud between AfriForum and the EFF. Earlier this year, the Cape Town Equality Court found Malema guilty of hate speech, a ruling that AfriForum hailed as a victory for its pressure campaign.
“Die Trump-administrasie het reeds gewys dat hulle @Julius_S_Malema se haatlike, gevaarlike retoriek en gewelddadige dreunsange soos ‘Kill the Boer’ baie kommerwekkend vind. Een van hul eise aan die Suid-Afrikaanse regering, om verhoudings te normaliseer, was om die ‘Kill the… pic.twitter.com/gyMHaAk7kP

Expert insight and political stakes
Professor Theo Neethling of the University of the Free State believes AfriForum is leveraging Trump’s stance on Malema to amplify its influence. He argues that the campaign is about more than accountability, suggesting it could restrict Malema’s access to international platforms and key Western countries.
Social media reaction
Public reaction online has been sharply divided. Supporters of AfriForum see the move as overdue international accountability, while EFF loyalists describe it as an attack designed to silence a political rival. Once again, Malema has become a lightning rod for debate in South Africa’s charged political landscape.
What remains uncertain is whether the Trump administration will act on AfriForum’s request. For now, the dossier has succeeded in keeping Malema’s politics in the international spotlight while deepening tensions at home.
