Nine Johannesburg areas to face planned eight-hour power outages in August
City Power schedules eight-hour planned outages for nine Johannesburg areas on 6 and 10 August 2026. Residents are urged to prepare and stay informed.
City Power Johannesburg has scheduled planned eight-hour power outages affecting nine areas in Johannesburg on Thursday, 6 August 2026 and Monday, 10 August 2026. The utility said the interruptions are to allow essential maintenance on the electricity network.
When and where the outages will take place
The outage linked to the Cyndia Substation is scheduled from 09:00 to 17:00 on Thursday, 6 August 2026. The areas listed for that outage are:
- Bernam Corlet Drive
- VW Melrose
- Atholl
- Oaklands
- Toyota Melrose
- Blu Bird Shopping Centre
- Nissan Melrose
In addition, the Banfield Switching Station will have an outage on Monday, 10 August 2026, from 08:00 to 16:00. The areas listed for that interruption are:
- Industria North
- Banfield Road
Why the work is being done
City Power said the outage aims to carry out essential maintenance on the electricity network. In its statement the utility said,
“The interruption is part of our program of constantly striving to provide a better service,”
Recent unrelated interruption in Alexandra area
City Power also reported that a termination cable supplying Alexandra Switching Station exploded on Monday, 3 August 2026. The company said the termination resulted in parts of Florida and surrounding areas experiencing a power outage.
About the explosion City Power said,
“The team is still on site investigating the cause of the explosion. Details on the damage and repair plan will be communicated after investigations,”
Advice to customers
City Power cautioned customers to treat their electricity supply points as live because power may be restored at any time. The utility described the planned interruptions as part of ongoing maintenance work to improve service.
