JMPD arrests two after R16 million copper recovery in Booysens

Two men have been arrested in Booysens after Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) Tactical Response Unit officers recovered suspected stolen copper sheets valued at approximately R16 million.

The arrests were made on Thursday, 6 August, during an intelligence-driven operation following information about copper sheets allegedly linked to a theft case in Durban.

Copper found inside two trucks

JMPD officers were alerted to a truck believed to be transporting the suspected stolen copper to a warehouse at the corner of Treu and Vlak Streets in Booysens.

When officers arrived at the premises, they searched the warehouse and found suspected stolen copper sheets inside two trucks parked in the yard.

The recovered copper was estimated to be worth around R16 million.

According to JMPD, the information was linked to a Mayden Wharf SAPS case in Durban.

Two suspects detained

Two 43-year-old Chinese male nationals who were found at the premises were arrested on suspicion of possessing stolen property.

They were taken to Johannesburg Central SAPS, where they were detained.

JMPD said the arrests followed intelligence-led policing and cooperation between law enforcement agencies.

The department said it remains committed to tackling crimes involving critical infrastructure and working with other law enforcement agencies and communities to bring those responsible to justice.
