ANC treasurer-general Gwen Ramokgopa, long seen as one of the governing party’s most respected and scandal-free leaders, has found herself at the centre of a social media storm. Anonymous online claims have attempted to link her to alleged underworld figure Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, currently facing a string of criminal charges.

For many political observers, the timing feels more than coincidental, arriving just as speculation grows around Ramokgopa’s potential run for the ANC presidency in 2027.

Online rumours ignite controversy

The controversy began when a series of anonymous messages started circulating on X (formerly Twitter), WhatsApp groups, and even being shared with media outlets. These posts alleged that Ramokgopa had benefited from illicit funds connected to Matlala, a businessman whose name has surfaced in several corruption scandals.

The claims, made without evidence, went as far as suggesting that Matlala and Ramokgopa were close enough to call each other “Ngwana ko hae” (Setswana for “sibling”) and that he had allegedly arranged cash drop-offs amounting to R2 million at the Pretoria East home of marketing executive Groovin Nchabeleng “on her behalf.”

But so far, none of these allegations have been substantiated, and no official evidence has surfaced to support them.

Who is Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala?

Matlala’s name has been linked to several high-profile controversies. His company, Medicare24 Tshwane District, once landed a R360 million South African Police Service contract that was later cancelled after being found to have been irregularly awarded.

He’s also currently in custody and faces money laundering charges as well as allegations of orchestrating a botched hit on his ex-girlfriend, actress Tebogo Thobejane.

Matlala’s network allegedly stretches into political circles, he’s even been mentioned in connection with suspended police minister Senzo Mchunu, through a mutual associate, Brown Mogotsi.

It’s this cloud of criminal intrigue that has made his name so explosive and why linking any politician to him immediately sparks headlines.

“A calculated smear” – Ramokgopa’s allies respond

Those close to Ramokgopa have dismissed the allegations as a smear campaign, suggesting that her rising profile within the ANC has made her a target.

A source within her circle said:

“Gwen’s biggest threat to her opponents is her clean image. She’s seen as one of the few ANC leaders without scandal that’s why some are desperate to drag her name through the mud.”

The same insider recalled earlier disinformation attempts in January, when Ramokgopa was falsely accused of receiving money from businessman Edwin Sodi, another corruption-accused figure linked to the failed Rooiwal wastewater project in Hammanskraal. Those claims quickly fizzled out.

Now, with the judicial commission of inquiry into criminality and corruption in the criminal justice system underway, chaired by retired Constitutional Court Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga, her detractors appear to have seized on the Matlala scandal to fuel new rumours.

Forensic probe underway

In a move to clear her name, the Progressive Business Forum (PBF), which Ramokgopa chairs, has launched a forensic investigation into the allegations.

Spokesperson Tshwane Molope confirmed that the PBF had enlisted Tayfin Forensic Auditors to trace the origins of the disinformation.

“These claims are misleading, false and baseless,” said Molope. “The forensic probe is almost complete, and we expect the report by Thursday. We will take legal steps if necessary to protect the integrity of the forum and its leadership.”

Politics behind the whispers

South Africa’s political landscape has a long history of anonymous smear campaigns surfacing in the run-up to key party contests. With the ANC’s 2027 elective conference still two years away, early positioning has already begun behind closed doors.

Ramokgopa’s steady ascent, from health MEC and Tshwane mayor to treasurer-general, has made her one of the party’s few credible female contenders for the top job. Her reputation for integrity and quiet professionalism has also earned her respect beyond party lines.

That makes her both a threat and a target.

As one senior ANC member put it:

“When you see fake WhatsApp messages and doctored screenshots start to circulate, you know a leadership battle is brewing.”

The allegations against Ramokgopa come at a time when the ANC is trying to rebuild public trust amid deepening corruption fatigue. For many ordinary South Africans, another round of mudslinging feels like déjà vu.

But if the forensic probe confirms the claims were fabricated, it could strengthen Ramokgopa’s image as a leader who stands above political games, something the ANC desperately needs ahead of the next election cycle.

For now, though, Ramokgopa remains silent publicly, focusing on her duties as treasurer-general. Her allies say she’ll let the facts and the investigation, speak for themselves.

Until then, the whispers continue, echoing through South Africa’s political corridors as the ruling party’s next chapter slowly begins to take shape.
