Lukhanyo Am Confident Sharks’ Springbok Reinforcements Can Ground Leinster’s Aerial Attack

The Sharks are gearing up for a defining clash against reigning United Rugby Championship (URC) champions Leinster and captain Lukhanyo Am believes his Springbok reinforcements could make all the difference.
Sharks Bolstered By Returning Springboks
The Durban outfit has endured a frustrating start to the new URC campaign, managing just two points from their opening two fixtures. But with Makazole Mapimpi and Ethan Hooker set to rejoin the squad, Am says the team is ready to rise above the early turbulence quite literally.
“We’re really excited about this game,” Am told reporters. “Leinster are coming home from tour and will be fired up. But we’ve got a boost with some of our Bok guys back, and we’re looking forward to finishing the tour on a high.”
Both teams are desperate for their first win of the season. Leinster, who fell to the Bulls at Loftus, are expected to return to their trademark tactical kicking game a strategy that has troubled the Sharks in recent weeks.
Countering The Aerial Threat
Am admitted the Sharks haven’t looked convincing under the high ball this season, but he believes Mapimpi and Hooker bring the kind of composure and experience needed to neutralise Leinster’s aerial pressure.
“They’re crucial to our team,” said Am. “They’ve done it for us before at both club and international level. That contestable kicking game is something they handle really well, and having them back will definitely help us.”
Turning Dominance Into Points
The Sharks’ struggles have been less about effort and more about execution. They dominated the Dragons up front but failed to convert opportunities into tries a lapse they can’t afford against a wounded Leinster side.
“When you face a team like Leinster, you have to capitalise on every opportunity,” Am explained. “They’re a quality side with great systems, but individual moments decide games. You can’t waste chances against them.”
A Personal Comeback
For Am himself, Saturday’s match is more than just a team test. After returning from a knee injury, the veteran centre sees the Dublin clash as a benchmark for his own form.
“Playing a quality side like Leinster in their backyard is the kind of challenge you want,” he said. “It’s a chance to see where you stand as a player and as a team.”
Fans React
South African fans on social media have rallied behind the Sharks, expressing confidence that the return of seasoned Boks could steady the ship. “Mapimpi under the high ball is a different beast,” one fan posted on X. Another added, “If the Sharks can hold their structure and stay disciplined, they’ve got this.”
What’s Next
Kick-off at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium is set for 6:30pm on Saturday. With both teams hungry for redemption and Lukhanyo Am leading a more battle-ready Sharks squad, this clash could set the tone for their entire URC campaign.
