Controversial businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala is back in the spotlight as he heads to the Johannesburg High Court on Monday to fight for his freedom. He’s appealing the magistrate’s court decision that denied him bail last montha ruling that has sparked public debate and social media chatter.

Matlala is facing serious charges, including the attempted murder of his ex-girlfriend, actress and influencer Tebogo Thobejane. She’s known to many South Africans for her role in the long-running soapie Muvhango and her large social media following.

Matlala’s legal team is now banking on the High Court to overturn that decision. However, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has made it clear they’ll oppose the appeal just as strongly as they did the initial bail bid.

The NPA’s stance has been welcomed by some South Africans online, especially those who believe wealthy suspects often find their way out of remand with ease. Others, however, say social media reactions have turned the case into a public trial before anything has been proven in court.
