Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala Heads to High Court as Bail Battle Heats Up
Controversial businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala is back in the spotlight as he heads to the Johannesburg High Court on Monday to fight for his freedom. He’s appealing the magistrate’s court decision that denied him bail last montha ruling that has sparked public debate and social media chatter.
The Case That Shook Sandton
Matlala is facing serious charges, including the attempted murder of his ex-girlfriend, actress and influencer Tebogo Thobejane. She’s known to many South Africans for her role in the long-running soapie Muvhango and her large social media following.
The incident goes back to 2023, when Thobejane was allegedly shot in the foot during a dramatic attack on the N1 highway near Sandton. According to investigators, the case doesn’t end with the shootingMatlala is also charged with conspiracy to commit murder and money laundering.
Why Bail Was Refused
In September, the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court ruled against granting him bail. Magistrate Syta Prinsloo said there were no exceptional circumstances that justified releasing Matlala, and flagged him as a clear flight risk.
Prosecutors painted a picture of someone with both the means and motive to disappear if released. The state highlighted three major red flags:
-
Access to a private jet
-
Foreign assets in Mauritius
-
Possession of a fraudulent Eswatini identity document
That combination alone was enough for the magistrate to keep him behind bars until trial.
High Court Appeal But With Heavy Opposition
Matlala’s legal team is now banking on the High Court to overturn that decision. However, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has made it clear they’ll oppose the appeal just as strongly as they did the initial bail bid.
The NPA’s stance has been welcomed by some South Africans online, especially those who believe wealthy suspects often find their way out of remand with ease. Others, however, say social media reactions have turned the case into a public trial before anything has been proven in court.
A Case Entangled With Public Interest and Celebrity Culture
Because the alleged victim is a well-known public figure, the case continues to attract wide attention. Thobejane has been both supported and scrutinized by the public in the pastespecially given her profile in entertainment and social media circles.
In South Africa, high-profile bail appeals often ignite conversations about privilege, gender-based violence, and the justice system’s ability to hold influential people accountable. This case is no different.
What Happens Next
If the High Court upholds the decision to deny bail, Matlala will remain in custody while preparing for trial on charges that carry long prison sentences if he’s convicted. If his appeal succeeds, it may trigger backlash from gender justice activists and victims’ rights organisations.
Either way, Monday’s appearance is set to be a crucial moment in a case that combines celebrity, alleged violence, and questions about money, power and mobility across borders.
