Matlala standoff: lawyers threaten to quit as Madlanga Commission forges ahead
According to IOL, Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala’s lawyers threatened to withdraw if he had to continue without lead counsel; the Madlanga Commission will press on with evidence.
According to IOL, Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala’s legal team threatened to withdraw from proceedings at the Madlanga Commission after Matlala instructed his lawyers to quit if he was required to continue without his lead advocate, Annaline van den Heever.
Lawyers ordered to withdraw, counsel tells commission
Advocate Fatima Missi told the commission:
“We are ordered to withdraw as Matlala representatives.”
Missi said the instruction followed concerns about Matlala’s ability to properly consult with his lawyers at Kgosi Mampuru II C-Max prison, complaints about late affidavits and heads of argument, and the legal risks posed by his pending criminal cases.
Commission refuses lengthy postponement, presses self-incrimination arguments
According to IOL, Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga refused to grant a lengthy postponement and directed that arguments on Matlala’s self-incrimination application proceed after a shorter break to allow consultation. Madlanga also ruled that the commission would continue hearing evidence concerning Matlala despite the withdrawal threat, saying the legal issues could largely be dealt with by counsel without extensive further consultation.
Matlala appears confused in the dock
When asked whether he understood the implications of the situation, Matlala appeared confused and said he did not understand what was happening, according to IOL.
Allegations and related criminal case
The coverage links Matlala to allegations tied to the Medicare24 SAPS tender and to alleged payments or gratifications involving police officers, according to IOL. The Medicare24 criminal case is scheduled for September.
Previous appearance and invocation of rights
Matlala first appeared before the commission on August 17, 2026, when he read a statement and repeatedly invoked his right against self-incrimination when questioned about the SAPS tender and alleged police-related dealings, according to IOL.
The proceedings at the Madlanga Commission continue.
