Mzansi Ballet’s ‘Private Presley’ Brings Elvis to Life in Johannesburg
A New Beat for a Ballet Classic
Elvis Presley has been reborn in tutus and spotlights. Johannesburg’s Pieter Toerien Theatre is alive with rhythm, rhinestones, and raw emotion as Mzansi Ballet brings back Private Presley: The Ballet, a reimagined tribute to the life and legacy of the King of Rock ’n Roll.
Running until 30 November, this updated production redefines what it means to tell a legend’s story through dance. Originally created by acclaimed choreographer Sean Bovim, the ballet has been given a fresh emotional pulse, blending the iconic swagger of Presley’s music with the elegance and precision of classical movement.
The Stars Take the Stage
Audiences are treated to a truly international performance. The production stars Jorge Wade from Mexico, a global ballet sensation known for his expressive power, alongside South Africa’s own Prima Ballerina Angela Revie, whose stage presence radiates both strength and vulnerability.
Their partnership tells Presley’s story in a way words never could, through fluid choreography that captures his rise to fame, his romances, and the deep struggles behind his showbiz smile.
Adding depth and energy to the production are vocal powerhouses Patience Mahema and Logan James, whose live performances inject soul into the ballet’s already rich narrative. Their voices bridge eras, reminding audiences why Elvis’s songs still resonate today.
Costumes, Craft, and Cultural Flair
Designer David Hutt brings the spectacle to life with shimmering costumes that blend classic 1950s Americana with modern flair. Sequins, leather, and lace move effortlessly across the stage, creating a visual feast that celebrates the glamour and grit of Presley’s career.
The performance runs for approximately two hours, including an interval, giving audiences time to soak in the nostalgia and perhaps grab a milkshake from Montecasino’s retro diners before curtain call.
A Season of Giving
Mzansi Ballet isn’t just entertaining audiences; it’s giving back. In the spirit of the festive season, theatre-goers are invited to bring along a gift for a child in need. Donations can be handed in at the Mzansi Ballet Friends table in the foyer, marked “Boy” or “Girl.” It’s a small gesture that echoes the production’s underlying message: that joy, music, and generosity are all forms of art.
A Love Letter to Two Worlds
Private Presley is more than a ballet about a music icon; it’s a cultural bridge. It fuses the raw, rebellious energy of rock with the grace and discipline of dance. It’s South Africa’s chance to see Elvis in a new light, told through artistry that moves both body and soul.
With performances now underway until 30 November, this is one show that proves legends never die; they just find new ways to dance.
