For the families at the heart of this tragedy, the wait for answers and accountability continues. The case against Sekhukhune United soccer star Shaune Mogaila has been postponed once more, stretching a painful legal process that began over a year ago.

The 29-year-old winger appeared in the Tembisa Regional Court on Monday, where his case was deferred to 2 December 2025. The reason for the latest delay is a procedural but critical step: the disclosure of the full docket contents.

A Glimpse into the Evidence

According to NPA spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane, this disclosure will allow both the prosecution and Mogaila’s defence team to review all the evidence gathered. This comprehensive file is expected to include:

  • Witness statements

  • Forensic evidence from the crash scene

  • Toxicology reports

  • The crucial dashcam footage that captured the collision

This evidence pertains to the October 2024 incident on Andrew Mapheto Road in Tembisa, where Mogaila’s BMW M2 collided head-on with a Hyundai Grand i10.

The Human Toll of the Crash

The consequences of that day were devastating. The crash claimed the life of nine-year-old Gomolemo Mavimbela-Kekana. Her mother, Keo Mavimbela-Kekana, and a 13-year-old boy, Thando Khethiwa, sustained critical injuries.

Mogaila allegedly fled the scene but handed himself over to police later that same day. He was subsequently released on R20,000 bail. At the time, Ekurhuleni Metro Police reported that broken liquor bottles and a suspected cocaine substance were found inside his vehicle.

Families Turn to AfriForum for Support

The slow pace of justice has taken its toll on the victims’ families. In July, a frustrated Keo Mavimbela-Kekana publicly stated she was “tired of the delays” and sought the assistance of AfriForum’s Private Prosecution Unit. The unit has confirmed it is now representing both Keo Mavimbela-Kekana and Carol Khethiwa, Thando’s mother.

As the legal machinery grinds slowly forward, the December court date represents another milestone in a painful journey for the families, who are clinging to the hope that the full disclosure of evidence will be a decisive step toward closure and justice.
