Driver arrested after BMW rear-ends Kia in Douglasdale crash that killed 24-year-old

A driver of a blue BMW was arrested after colliding with a white Kia in Douglasdale in the early hours of Sunday, killing the 24-year-old Kia driver. The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) said the crash occurred at 03:31 at the intersection of Douglas Drive and Taylor Road.

How the crash unfolded

Preliminary reports from JMPD indicate both vehicles were travelling north along Douglas Drive, with the white Kia Pegas ahead of a blue BMW 320i. It is alleged the BMW collided with the rear of the Kia, forcing the Kia off the left side of the road and into a private property boundary wall.

Victim, suspect and breathalyser result

JMPD said the male driver of the Kia, 24 years old, sustained fatal injuries and was declared dead at the scene. His body was transported to the Hillbrow State Mortuary. The BMW driver reported no injuries.

After his arrest, the BMW driver tested positive on a breathalyser, recording 0.87mg/l, which JMPD said is above the legal limit of 0.24mg/l. He was detained at Douglasdale South African Police Service (SAPS) and faces charges of driving under the influence and culpable homicide. He is expected to appear in court soon.

JMPD response and broader warning

“Operating a vehicle while intoxicated poses a serious risk to public safety, and officers will continue to enforce a zero-tolerance stance on Johannesburg roads,” JMPD concluded.

JMPD also reported that it had arrested 211 motorists for DUI over the last two weeks, noting that drunk driving remains a significant factor in fatal crashes, serious injuries and reckless road behaviour.

JMPD urged motorists to take personal responsibility, arrange alternative transport, nominate a designated driver or use e-hailing services if they plan to consume alcohol.
