South Africa Pledges Stronger Ties with Iraq Following Parliamentary Elections

Pretoria looks forward to working with Iraq’s new government amid regional complexities

South Africa has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening relations with Iraq following the country’s parliamentary elections earlier this month, welcoming the democratic process as a sign of political stability in a region often overshadowed by conflict.

Iraqis went to the polls on 11 November 2025, marking a rare moment of calm amid recent turbulence in the Middle East. Preliminary results indicated a decisive lead for the coalition of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, who celebrated victory and is set to form the next government.

Diplomatic Congratulations and Bilateral Aspirations

The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco) congratulated both the Iraqi government and its citizens on the peaceful conduct of the elections.

“These elections demonstrate the dedication of the Iraqi people to uphold democratic governance and national stability,” Dirco stated.

South Africa expressed eagerness to work with Iraq’s new administration, emphasizing the goal of deepening bilateral cooperation across political, economic, and sectoral areas. The statement highlighted collaboration on global governance, regional peace, and security initiatives, reflecting Pretoria’s longstanding interest in fostering diplomatic partnerships beyond the African continent.

Challenges Ahead for Iraq’s New Leadership

While al-Sudani’s coalition may enjoy parliamentary dominance, the new government faces a daunting set of domestic challenges. Iraqis are pressing for solutions to unemployment, infrastructure decay, and under-resourced education and healthcare systems, all exacerbated by years of corruption and mismanagement.

On the international stage, the government will also need to navigate complex alliances, balancing relationships with key powers including Iran and the United States, whose competing interests often place Iraq in a delicate geopolitical position.

Al-Sudani rose to prominence three years ago under the Coordination Framework, an alliance of pro-Iran Shiite parties that has remained influential in Iraq’s political landscape. Analysts suggest that his ability to maintain both domestic stability and international equilibrium will be tested as he assumes leadership of the newly elected parliament.

South Africa’s Role and Regional Perspective

For Pretoria, Iraq represents a strategic partner in the Middle East, offering opportunities for trade, investment, and shared initiatives on peace and development. Social media reaction in South Africa has been largely supportive, with users welcoming the government’s emphasis on mutual growth and diplomatic engagement. One Twitter user wrote:

“It’s encouraging to see South Africa actively fostering ties with countries outside the continent cooperation with Iraq could open doors for trade and stability initiatives.”

Dirco highlighted that South Africa’s commitment is not limited to political dialogue but extends to socio-economic collaboration and sector-specific projects, signaling a comprehensive approach to bilateral relations.

As Iraq forms its new government, Pretoria has positioned itself as a partner ready to support national development and regional stability. Both countries appear committed to advancing mutual interests while contributing to broader goals in peace, security, and sustainable development.

While the path ahead is complex, the elections represent a moment of democratic affirmation in Iraq, and South Africa has reaffirmed its readiness to strengthen ties and work closely with its Middle Eastern counterpart.
