A routine evening commute turned into a nightmare at a busy Bedfordview intersection on Monday afternoon, leaving one man dead and a community on edge. In what appears to be a targeted attack, a man was shot and killed while sitting in his car at a red light.

The incident occurred at the intersection of Van Buuren and Van der Linde roads at approximately 4:00 PM on November 25. According to Bedfordview SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Lillian Modiga, eyewitnesses reported that a silver-grey VW Polo with two occupants pulled up behind the victim’s white Toyota Quest.

In a brazen act of violence, the occupants of the Polo opened fire. Paramedics were called to the scene but could do nothing; the man was declared dead on the spot.

The aftermath of the shooting left a chilling scene. Police forensics teams combing the area recovered 18 spent cartridge cases, pointing to a sustained and brutal attack. In a significant discovery, officers also found a firearm loaded with 15 live rounds of ammunition inside the victim’s own vehicle, raising further questions about the circumstances of the killing.

The Bedfordview SAPS has officially opened a murder investigation. The motive for the killing is still unknown, and the suspects remain at large. Police are urging anyone who witnessed the event or who has any information that could lead to the identification and arrest of the suspects to come forward immediately.

The shooting has sent a wave of anxiety through the area, a stark reminder of the violent crime that can erupt without warning, even at a bustling intersection during the evening rush hour.
