Herman Mashaba condemns DJ Warras killing as attack on crime-fighters in Joburg CBD
DJ Warras Murder Sparks Outcry: Mashaba Calls It an Attack on Crime-Fighters
The murder of DJ Warras in Johannesburg’s CBD has shaken the city, drawing sharp condemnation from political leaders who say his death represents more than just a personal tragedy, it’s an assault on all South Africans standing up against crime.
ActionSA president Herman Mashaba described the killing as a brutal attack on those actively working to tackle rampant criminality, particularly around hijacked buildings in the inner city.
How It Happened
Police say the 40-year-old media personality, Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, was shot just after noon on Tuesday, 16 December, outside Zambesi House in the Johannesburg CBD, directly opposite the Carlton Centre.
Gauteng Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Fred Kekana confirmed that CCTV footage shows the primary suspect a short man with dreadlocks approach Warras before opening fire. Another suspect, reportedly dressed in a security uniform, was also present. Cartridges were left at the scene, ruling out a drive-by shooting. Police are actively tracing both suspects and the weapon used in the attack.
A Targeted Attack on Community Safety
In a statement, Mashaba emphasised that Warras’ murder targeted more than just an individual. Reports indicate that DJ Warras was actively engaged in reclaiming hijacked buildings and confronting crime in the CBD.
“The killers have shown no regard for human life,” Mashaba said. “They have declared war on law-abiding South Africans, particularly those who step up to fight crime and reclaim our communities from these destructive elements.”
He warned that the assassination would not intimidate citizens, saying:
“If the thugs behind his assassination believe they have stopped the fight to reclaim Johannesburg’s inner city, they are gravely mistaken.”
Johannesburg Needs Leadership, Mashaba Says
Mashaba urged stronger leadership to tackle Johannesburg’s ongoing crime challenges. “Now, more than ever, Johannesburg needs a tough, no-nonsense leader to do the hard work of reclaiming our city from illegal foreigners, drug dealers, and criminals who operate with near impunity,” he said.
He extended deepest condolences to DJ Warras’ family and friends, acknowledging the “devastating” nature of the loss.
Public Reaction
Social media users mourned the death of the outspoken media personality, many highlighting his role in confronting crime and corruption in the city. Some X users linked the killing to ongoing battles over hijacked properties, while others called for stronger community and police collaboration to restore safety in Johannesburg’s central districts.
As the investigation continues, the killing of DJ Warras underscores the perils faced by those who challenge entrenched criminal networks in Johannesburg. Mashaba’s statement makes it clear: the city’s fight against crime will not be silenced by fear.
