Thomas Tuchel Commits To England Until Euro 2028
When Thomas Tuchel took over from Gareth Southgate in late 2024, there were raised eyebrows. A German coach leading England into a new era was always going to stir debate. Fast forward to 2026 and the conversation has shifted completely.
Tuchel is not going anywhere.
The The Football Association confirmed on Thursday that the 52 year old has signed a contract extension that will keep him in charge of the national team until the end of UEFA Euro 2028, which will be hosted across the UK and Ireland.
It is a statement of intent from both sides.
From Short Term Appointment To Long Term Vision
Tuchel was initially appointed in October 2024 with a deal that ran only until the end of the 2026 World Cup. At the time, it felt like a calculated, short term gamble. England wanted experience. Tuchel wanted another crack at international football.
What followed helped settle any doubts.
England powered through World Cup qualifying, winning all eight of their group matches under the former Chelsea FC boss. An unbeaten campaign, clinical performances and renewed tactical clarity have reshaped how many fans view the national side.
The FA says the new agreement provides clarity and full focus heading into the World Cup in North America later this year. In tournament football, stability matters. England have learned that the hard way before.
A Coach Who Feels At Home
Tuchel did not hide his satisfaction after putting pen to paper.
He described himself as proud and happy to continue leading England, adding that he has loved every minute working with the players and coaching staff. For a manager known for his intensity and high standards, that sense of belonging matters.
It is also significant that this extension takes him beyond the World Cup cycle. Too often international managers operate in four year blocks. By committing through to Euro 2028 on home soil, Tuchel is tying his legacy to a tournament that will unfold in front of English crowds.
The pressure will be immense. The opportunity even bigger.
Manchester United Speculation Put To Bed
There had been whispers linking Tuchel with a potential move to Manchester United following the departure of Ruben Amorim. Despite an improvement in results under caretaker boss Michael Carrick, speculation persisted that Tuchel could return to club management after the World Cup.
This new deal effectively ends that conversation.
By committing through to 2028, Tuchel has signalled that his focus is firmly on England. For the FA, that removes uncertainty. For supporters, it provides reassurance that there will be no sudden exit should a big club come calling.
What This Means For England’s Next Chapter
England’s recent history has been one of near misses and what if moments. Southgate guided them deep into major tournaments but fell short of lifting silverware. Tuchel inherits a squad entering its prime, with expectations rising rather than fading.
Extending his contract now suggests that the FA believes he is the man to convert promise into trophies.
With the 2026 World Cup looming and Euro 2028 set to take place at home, England have drawn a clear line under short term thinking. This is about building momentum, continuity and belief.
For Tuchel, it is simple. Deliver on the world stage, then chase history on home soil.
