Springboks Target Crucial Win in Turin

The Springboks are preparing for a vital match against Italy in Turin this Saturday, with their sights firmly set on securing a win in the Nations Championship South section. Fullback Damian Willemse shared insights into the team’s mindset ahead of the game, indicating that while bonus points and points difference are important, winning remains the primary objective.

Top of the Pool at Stake

A commanding performance against Italy could be significant for the Springboks’ ambitions to finish first in their pool and book a spot in the main event on Finals Weekend at the end of November. Italy’s current world ranking at 11th, combined with several key injuries in their squad, places them as underdogs against a Springbok side close to full strength.

Despite this, Willemse emphasised that the Springboks are approaching the fixture with focus.

“I think that (a bonus point) obviously is a key factor going into this weekend’s game. But I don’t think that is something we are chasing at the moment,” Willems said at a press conference. “I know we are level on points with New Zealand, so if we are in the position to go for a bonus point we will obviously look to do that. But, I think the main thing for us is to perform well and win the game, which is what we want to do.”

Competition Format Brings New Pressure

This season marks the first time the Springboks are competing on their end-of-year tour within a structured competition format, adding an extra element of excitement and urgency. Willemse commented on the shift, saying,

“It is a bit different. This is the first time that we are trialling this competition, so it’s very exciting for us because there is something we’ll be playing for towards the end of the year. There’s a cup on the line, which we are all looking forward to. But we’ve got to keep one foot in front of the other. We’ve got Italy this week and we’re very much focused on that game.”

The Springboks find themselves tied with New Zealand on 15 points, leading the pool only on points difference. The race for bonus points and a healthy margin is tight, especially with their pool rivals facing lower-ranked teams in the final rounds.

Looking Ahead Without Losing Focus

The significance of securing a strong result in Turin is underscored by the challenges that lie ahead. After Italy, the Springboks are set for tough clashes against France in Paris and Ireland in Dublin, matches expected to test their resolve and consistency.

Italy may be dealing with injuries and being viewed as a less daunting opponent, but the Springboks aren’t letting their guard down. Willemse highlighted the danger of losing focus:

“It’s not going to be an easy game. They are a strong side, and they’ll come up with good plans. We’ve got to stay dialled in and make sure we don’t lose track or any focus on what’s ahead. We saw last year when we played them here in Turin how dangerous they are.”

Nations Championship: The Road to Finals Weekend

The new competition structure adds a layer of pressure, as every match and point could influence progression. The All Blacks, who are neck-and-neck with South Africa, face their own run of fixtures against Scotland, Wales, and England. Meanwhile, the Springboks must make the most of every opportunity, knowing tougher opponents await.

  • Springboks and All Blacks are level on 15 points at the top of the South section.
  • Springboks lead on points difference but face a difficult route with upcoming matches against France and Ireland.
  • Italy offers an opportunity to secure points before crucial fixtures.

With the end-of-year tour now part of a meaningful championship campaign, the approach and mindset have shifted for teams and supporters alike. Willemse’s comments reflect a balance between ambition and pragmatismacknowledging the importance of bonus points, but prioritising the foundational task of winning each game.

The Task at Hand

This weekend’s match in Turin will test the Springboks’ ability to maintain focus and deliver results amid heightened expectations. As Willemse and the team maintain, while a bonus point is valuable, victory must come first.
