South Africa’s Blitzboks delivered a gritty performance in New York on Sunday night, edging Fiji 10-7 in a nail-biting final to secure both the tournament title and the 2026 HSBC SVNS series crown.

The victory capped off a dominant season for the Springbok Sevens side, who have consistently been among the standout teams on the global circuit. By lifting the trophy in New York, the Blitzboks added a fourth tournament win to their campaign after earlier triumphs in Cape Town, Perth and Vancouver.

For South African rugby fans, it was another reminder of how formidable the national sevens programme remains on the world stage.

Early strike gives South Africa the edge

The final began at a frantic pace, with both teams testing each other physically from the opening whistle.

South Africa’s breakthrough came through sheer defensive intensity. Impi Visser forced a turnover in the tackle, and the ball quickly moved through the Blitzboks’ hands before Gino Cupido sprinted over the line just two minutes into the match.

It was the only score of the first half, but it gave the Blitzboks crucial momentum in what was shaping up to be a tightly contested final.

Leyds extends the lead after the break

The pressure continued in the second half, with the margin for error incredibly small.

Another defensive lapse from Fiji proved costly when Tristan Leyds reacted quickest after the islanders lost possession close to their own tryline. Leyds gathered the loose ball and dotted down, stretching South Africa’s lead to 10-0 with five minutes left to play.

In sevens rugby, however, no lead is ever completely safe.

Fiji launch late comeback bid

Fiji soon showed why they remain one of the most dangerous teams in world rugby sevens.

Terio Veilawa crossed the line and added the conversion to cut the deficit to just three points, setting up a tense final few minutes.

With time almost up, Fiji launched one last attacking wave deep inside South Africa’s half. But with the tryline in sight, a crucial knock-on halted the move and handed possession back to the Blitzboks.

From the resulting scrum Fiji conceded a penalty, allowing South Africa to calmly kick the ball into touch and celebrate the title.

Blitzboks battled past Argentina earlier

The road to the final had already tested South Africa earlier in the day.

The Blitzboks booked their place in the decider with a determined 14-5 semi-final victory over Argentina.

Sebastiaan Jobb opened the scoring early after a turnover sparked a swift attack, and Selvyn Davids later produced a spectacular 70-metre run to stretch the lead to 14-0 at halftime.

Argentina fought back through a try from Marcos Moneta in the second half, but South Africa’s defence stood firm during a frantic closing spell.

A season to remember for the Blitzboks

Winning in New York confirmed South Africa as the standout team in the 2026 HSBC SVNS Series.

Four tournament victories and consistent performances throughout the season underline the depth of talent within the Blitzboks squad. The triumph also reinforces the country’s proud sevens legacy, which has long been a source of national pride for rugby supporters.

For fans back home, especially those who packed stadiums during the Cape Town leg earlier in the season, the New York success feels like the perfect ending to a remarkable campaign for the green and gold.
