Senegal Take AFCON Title Fight To CAS After Shock CAF U-Turn

African football has been thrown into turmoil after Senegal made the bold decision to challenge one of the most controversial rulings in recent AFCON history.

The Fédération Sénégalaise de Football has officially taken its case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, hoping to overturn a decision that stripped them of their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title long after the final whistle had blown.

CAF Decision Turns Final On Its Head

What unfolded behind closed doors has now overshadowed what many believed was a settled result on the pitch.

CAF’s Appeal Board ruled in favour of Morocco following a protest lodged by their football federation. In doing so, they effectively rewrote the outcome of the AFCON final, awarding Morocco a 3-0 victory by forfeit.

At the heart of the ruling were violations of Articles 82 and 84, which deal with team conduct during matches. CAF concluded that Senegal had breached these regulations, leading to their participation in the final being nullified altogether.

It is a rare and dramatic move in international football, where results are almost always decided on the field rather than in boardrooms.

What Happens To The Sanctions

Alongside the headline decision, CAF also adjusted several disciplinary measures linked to the chaotic final.

Morocco’s Ismaël Saibari saw his hefty $100,000 fine scrapped, although he will still serve a suspension of two matches, with one of those suspended.

Other penalties were revised rather than removed. The fine related to the ball boy incident was reduced to $50,000, while the sanction tied to laser interference was partially lowered but still stands. A separate $100,000 fine for interference in the VAR area remains fully in place.

These changes suggest CAF attempted to rebalance accountability across both teams, even as the main ruling heavily favoured Morocco.
