If there was ever a match that reminded fans why the UEFA Champions League remains football’s biggest stage, this was it.
Defending champions Paris Saint-Germain edged past Bayern Munich 5-4 in a semifinal first leg that delivered chaos, quality and a record number of goals for this stage of the competition.
Nine goals. Endless momentum swings. And a tie that is still very much alive heading into Germany next week.
From the opening whistle, it was clear this was not going to be a cagey semifinal. Both sides came in as two of the most attacking teams in Europe this season, and neither held back.
It was Bayern who struck first, with Harry Kane calmly converting a 17th-minute penalty. In doing so, he etched his name into the record books as the first English player to score in six consecutive Champions League matches.
But PSG responded the way champions do.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia pulled them level with a sharp finish after cutting inside, before João Neves nodded them ahead. Bayern briefly clawed their way back through Michael Olise, but PSG regained control just before halftime when Ousmane Dembélé buried a penalty.
At the break, it already felt like a full match had been played.
The second half began with PSG in full flow.
Kvaratskhelia struck again just after the restart, and moments later Dembélé added his second of the night to stretch the lead to 5-2. At that point, the tie looked all but decided.
For a brief spell, the Parisians played like a side ready to defend their European crown without hesitation.
But if there is one thing Bayern Munich are known for, it is resilience.
Within three minutes, the German side flipped the narrative again. Dayot Upamecano and Luis Díaz struck in quick succession, dragging the score back to 5-4 and breathing life into the tie.
Suddenly, what looked like a runaway PSG win turned into a nervous finish.
Both teams kept pushing until the final whistle, with PSG even rattling the woodwork late on through Senny Mayulu, but no further goals came.
PSG coach Luis Enrique summed it up perfectly after the match, describing it as a game where any result could have been justified.
And he is not wrong.
Matches like this rarely happen in semifinals, where caution usually rules. Instead, fans were treated to something closer to a final, with both teams refusing to compromise on attacking football.
With the second leg set for Munich, the tie remains delicately balanced.
Bayern will take confidence from their late surge, knowing that a two-goal win at home could send them through. PSG, meanwhile, carry a narrow advantage but will be well aware that nothing is settled.
For neutral fans, this is exactly what European football is about. High stakes, world-class talent and a storyline that refuses to follow the script.
Next week cannot come soon enough.
