Showmax Originals Move To DStv Stream As Platform Nears Shutdown
A New Chapter For Showmax Content
For many South Africans, Showmax has been part of the weekly routine. From binge watching local dramas to catching up on reality TV, it has quietly built a loyal audience over the years.
Now, as the platform approaches its final weeks, MultiChoice has confirmed where some of that content is headed next.
Showmax Originals and selected titles will move to DStv Stream, where they will live in a dedicated section within the app. It is a move that answers a question many subscribers have been asking since the shutdown was announced earlier this month.
What Viewers Can Expect On DStv Stream
The transition means that popular local titles are not disappearing. Instead, they are being folded into the DStv Stream experience.
At launch, viewers can expect to find well known shows like The Wife, Youngins, Devilsdorp, Adulting, Law, Love and Betrayal and Wura. Afrikaans favourites such as Die Kantoor and Koek will also be available, alongside a selection of international series including Starfleet Academy and Real Housewives editions.
MultiChoice says more content will be added weekly, suggesting that the library will continue to grow over time.
For access, the content will be available to DStv Compact and Premium customers, including those using satellite packages with streaming access and standalone streaming subscribers. DStv Compact Stream currently starts at R299 per month.
The End Of Showmax As We Know It
While the content may live on, the Showmax platform itself is entering its final stretch.
Subscribers across Africa have already started receiving notifications confirming that new subscriptions and renewals will stop from 31 March. The full shutdown is set for 30 April 2026.
It marks the end of an era for one of Africa’s most recognisable streaming services, which played a major role in bringing local stories to a wider audience.
As MultiChoice’s Nomsa Philiso pointed out, Showmax helped open the door for African storytelling to reach global standards. That focus, the company says, will continue even as the platform closes.
What Is Missing From The Move
The shift to DStv Stream is not a like for like replacement.
One of the biggest changes is the viewing experience itself. Unlike Showmax, which offered an ad free subscription model, DStv Stream includes advertising. For many viewers, this will be a noticeable adjustment.
There is also a clear gap when it comes to international content. Major global catalogues linked to brands like HBO, Warner Bros, Paramount and Peacock are not mentioned as part of the migration.
These titles were a key part of Showmax’s relaunch in 2024, and their absence raises questions about what the long term content strategy will look like.
A Shift In South Africa’s Streaming Landscape
This move says a lot about where streaming in South Africa is heading.
Instead of multiple standalone platforms, there is a clear push towards consolidation, with DStv Stream becoming the central hub for MultiChoice’s digital offering.
For viewers, it means adapting to a new way of watching. The content is still there, but the experience is changing.
And as Showmax prepares to sign off at the end of April, it leaves behind a legacy that helped shape how South Africans consume local entertainment today.
