‘Bad Behaviour’ investigates SA troubled teens discipline camps

A new M-Net documentary is shining a light on South Africa’s troubled teen discipline camps, following allegations of abuse at behavioural correction facilities and discipline camps.

Bad Behaviour, produced by IdeaCandy, investigates behavioural correction facilities, rehabilitation programmes and discipline camps used by families seeking help with children and teenagers experiencing behavioural or substance abuse challenges.

The four-part documentary premieres on M-Net on Tuesday, 25 August at 8pm. It examines what producers describe as South Africa’s largely unregulated troubled teen industry, with contributions from psychologists, prosecutors, investigative journalists, former participants and affected families.

The documentary follows several case studies, including a discipline camp using military-style training and a rehabilitation centre for teenagers. It also examines allegations of dangerous practices, abuse and limited oversight at some facilities.

The issue gained national attention in April 2025 when 21 teenagers were reportedly rescued from a disciplinary camp in Mpumalanga after allegations of mistreatment. Police opened an investigation following claims involving physical assaults and poor conditions.
