There is something about a comeback that shifts the energy in a squad. For the Blitzboks, that spark comes in the form of Quewin Nortje, who is finally back in the mix just as the season reaches its most decisive phase.
After months on the sidelines, the 23-year-old speedster is set to make his first appearance of the 2026 campaign when South Africa opens its World Championship push in Hong Kong next week.
And for a team already riding a wave of confidence, his return could not have come at a better time.
Nortje’s absence has been felt throughout the HSBC SVNS season. Injuries kept him out of all six regular tournaments, forcing the Blitzboks to adapt without one of their most dangerous finishers.
But now, fully fit and back in contention, he returns with a proven record that speaks for itself. With 32 tries in just 12 tournaments, Nortje brings a level of attacking sharpness that few players can match in the sevens format.
His last outing in the green and gold jersey came at the World Championship in Los Angeles in 2025, where South Africa lifted the title. That memory alone adds an extra layer of belief heading into this year’s campaign.
The timing of Nortje’s return lines up with a Blitzboks side that has quietly built serious momentum. South Africa heads into Hong Kong on the back of three consecutive tournament wins, including a strong showing in New York to close out the regular series.
Locally, that consistency has reignited belief in the sevens setup. After a few seasons of rebuilding, there is a growing sense that this squad is once again becoming a force on the global stage.
However, Hong Kong presents a unique challenge. Despite their success elsewhere, it remains the one major stop on the circuit where the Blitzboks have yet to lift the trophy. That alone gives this tournament added weight.
Nortje’s return is part of a reshuffle forced by injuries picked up during the North American leg.
Christie Grobbelaar, Dewald Human and Gino Cupido have all been ruled out, opening the door for Zain Davids and Jayden Nell to step in alongside Nortje.
Davids returns after being rested, while Nell continues his rise after an impressive debut in New York. His performances there were enough to convince head coach Philip Snyman that he is ready for the intensity of Hong Kong, one of the toughest environments in world sevens rugby.
For Snyman, the focus has been clear since the team regrouped in Stellenbosch. The message was simple. Start again.
The Blitzboks have treated the World Championship series as a fresh campaign, despite their recent success. Training sessions have been intense, with players pushed back to basics to realign with the team’s goals.
It is a mindset that reflects a broader shift in South African rugby culture, where consistency and long term excellence are becoming just as important as short term wins.
While a few players will experience Hong Kong for the first time, the majority of the squad brings valuable experience. Between them, the group has made dozens of trips to the iconic Far East venue.
That blend of seasoned campaigners and emerging talent could prove crucial in a tournament known for its unpredictable nature.
For fans back home, especially those who have followed the Blitzboks through their ups and downs, this feels like a squad that is finally finding its balance again.
The Blitzboks depart for Hong Kong on Thursday, carrying both momentum and expectation.
With upcoming stops in Valladolid and Bordeaux still to come, this opening tournament could set the tone for their entire World Championship campaign.
And with Quewin Nortje back in the mix, South Africa heads into the next phase of the season with something every title contender needs.
Belief.
