In a derby that had tension written all over it, Liverpool found a way to snatch victory right at the death, breaking Everton hearts and keeping their Champions League ambitions firmly alive.
It was not pretty, and for long spells it looked like it might slip away. But big moments often belong to big players, and Virgil van Dijk delivered exactly that when it mattered most.
Derby days on Merseyside rarely follow a script, and Everton came flying out of the blocks with real intent. For the opening 20 minutes, the home side looked sharper, hungrier, and more dangerous.
Beto and Dwight McNeil both tested Liverpool early on, pushing the visitors onto the back foot and giving the crowd plenty to get behind. It was the kind of start Everton fans would have hoped for, especially in a fixture where momentum can shift in an instant.
The game’s first major turning point came just before the half-hour mark. Everton thought they had broken the deadlock through Iliman Ndiaye, only for VAR to intervene and rule the goal out.
That moment proved costly.
Within minutes, Liverpool flipped the script. Mohamed Salah, as clinical as ever, made Everton pay by finishing off a move created by Cody Gakpo. From potential celebration to frustration, the emotional swing inside the stadium was massive.
From there, Liverpool began to take control, probing and testing Jordan Pickford repeatedly before the break.
Whatever was said in the Everton dressing room at halftime worked. The hosts came out with renewed urgency and were rewarded in the 55th minute.
A well-worked move involving Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall ended with a composed finish to level things up, bringing the contest back to life and reigniting belief among the home supporters.
From that point, the game opened up. Both sides searched for a winner, but clear-cut chances were hard to come by. Long-range efforts and half-chances became the order of the day as tension grew with every passing minute.
Just when it seemed the spoils would be shared, Liverpool struck in the most dramatic fashion imaginable.
Deep into stoppage time, Dominik Szoboszlai swung in a corner, and up stepped captain Virgil van Dijk. Rising above everyone, he powered home a header that silenced the home crowd and sparked wild celebrations among the travelling fans.
It was a moment of leadership and composure, the kind that defines seasons.
The result could prove decisive in the race for European football.
Liverpool remain in fifth place, holding onto the final Champions League qualifying spot, and now sit seven points clear of sixth-placed Chelsea. In a season where consistency has been hard to come by, grinding out results like this could make all the difference.
For Everton, the defeat leaves them in mid-table, still searching for stability as the campaign winds down.
The Merseyside Derby has always been about more than just three points. It is pride, history, and emotion packed into 90 minutes and, in this case, a few extra added on.
For Liverpool, it was a reminder that persistence pays off. For Everton, it will feel like an opportunity missed.
Either way, this was a derby that delivered drama right to the final whistle.
