What began as a moment of mourning has turned into a devastating loss for families in Limpopo.

Six people have died following a suspected food poisoning incident at a funeral in Mmotong-wa-Bogobe village, just outside Polokwane. Among the victims is a seven-year-old girl, a detail that has shaken the community even further.

Dozens Hospitalised After Funeral Meal

According to local authorities, more than 70 people fell ill after eating food that is believed to have been contaminated during the funeral gathering over the weekend.

Emergency services were quickly overwhelmed as residents began reporting symptoms. Many were rushed to nearby hospitals, where medical teams worked through the night to stabilise patients.

Ward councillor Jacob Ntlemo confirmed that at least 74 people were affected, with several already discharged after responding well to treatment. Others remain under observation as doctors monitor their recovery.

Communities Left Reeling

The victims come from surrounding areas including Ga Maja, Ga Mashashane and Seshego, highlighting just how widespread the impact has been.

In many South African communities, funerals are not just ceremonies. They are moments of unity, where extended families and neighbours gather, share meals and support one another through grief. That is what makes this incident particularly heartbreaking. A space meant for comfort has instead left families dealing with another layer of loss.

Questions Around Food Safety

While investigations are still underway, early indications suggest the food may have been laced with poison. Authorities are expected to conduct further tests to determine exactly what caused the contamination.

Foodborne illnesses are not uncommon in large gatherings, especially where food is prepared in bulk. However, incidents involving suspected poisoning raise far more serious concerns, including the possibility of deliberate tampering.

A Community Searching For Answers

For now, the focus remains on supporting affected families and ensuring those still in hospital recover fully. At the same time, many in the community are looking for clarity on how such a tragedy could happen at an event meant to honour the dead.

As investigations continue, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of food safety, particularly at large communal events that are such a vital part of South African life.
