Top five South Africans to watch in the URC pool stage
Who made the list
This selection highlights one key performer from each franchise that featured in the conversation during the URC pool stage: the Lions, Stormers, Sharks and Bulls plus a veteran whose leadership proved vital.
Quan Horn (Lions)
Quan Horn was the Lions’ most dependable player during the URC campaign. According to Citizen, Horn will for the second time pick up the URC’s ironman award, having played an incredible 1,440 minutes over the season. Beyond his availability, Horn contributed strongly in attack and defence and offered a powerful kicking game that helped keep the Lions ticking.
Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu (Stormers)
Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu has been highlighted as the country’s most exciting rising star. According to Citizen, he has arguably been the best performing player from South Africa in this season’s URC. Feinberg-Mngomezulu led the Stormers’ line, delivered on both attack and defence, and finished the season as the competition’s top points scorer with 158 points, according to Citizen.
Andre Esterhuizen (Sharks)
In a difficult season for the Sharks, Andre Esterhuizen shone both as a hybrid back and as captain. His form followed a strong international season for the Springboks the previous year and he played a leading role in the Sharks’ improved performances, even though the franchise ultimately missed out on a playoff spot.
Marcell Coetzee (Bulls)
Marcell Coetzee, a veteran presence for the Bulls, provided steady leadership and consistently high-level performances. His role as a senior figure proved important when other forwards were unavailable due to injury or rest protocols.
Chris Smith (Lions)
Chris Smith brought calm and accuracy to the Lions’ halves after his arrival. He became a key contributor across the season, and Citizen notes he just missed out on being the URC’s top points scorer when Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu edged ahead on the final weekend of pool action.
Competition context
South Africa had three teams in the URC top eight a continuation of the country’s strong presence in the competition. The Stormers and Bulls have now reached the URC knockouts in every season of the tournament, and the Lions made the playoffs for the first time. The Sharks failed to reach the knockout stage for the second time.
