Worcester Grade 2 boy dies after rugby scrum machine accident

Eight-year-old Granville van der Horst, a Grade 2 learner at Esselenpark Primary School in Worcester, died after a rugby scrum machine fell on him while he was playing with friends.

What happened

The incident occurred on 30 July 2026 when the heavy training equipment toppled over and pinned Granville to the ground. He did not survive the incident.

School and community response

Esselenpark Primary School, where Granville was known affectionately as “Peanut”, described the event as a freak accident in a Facebook tribute. The post said Granville’s passing left a “profound void” among his family, friends, educators and the school community.

“It is with deep sadness that the Esselenpark Primary School community acknowledges the tragic passing of one of our beloved learners and friends, Granville ‘Peanut’ van der Horst, who died in a freak accident on Thursday afternoon,”

The Western Cape Education Department extended condolences to the Van der Horst family and confirmed that psychosocial support will be offered to both the family and the school.
