Cold front to blanket Joburg into weekend as temperatures plunge, EMS warns on heating safety

Johannesburg is bracing for a blast of cold, wet and windy weather as a cold front moves over Gauteng from Thursday, 4 June, and is expected to persist into the weekend. Forecasts from Gauteng Weather show daytime highs but a sharp overnight chill that will force many residents to use home heating.

What the forecast says

Gauteng Weather has forecast that the mercury in Johannesburg on Friday will drop to 2°C with a high of 19°C. Pretoria was forecast to see a low of 4°C and a high of 21°C. The agency said wet, windy conditions would accompany the cooler temperatures.

Emergency services issue safety warnings

The City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services urged residents to take precautions when using heating devices as the cold spell arrives.

“Residents are urged to exercise caution when using heating devices, such as heaters, braizers or imbaula, not to leave them unattended while in use, to prevent fire incidents at home.”

The EMS spokesperson, Robert Mulaudzi, reminded residents to use braziers in well-ventilated areas and to move them outside before going to bed. He added:

“Heaters and candles must not be left unattended while in use. Also, monitor young children around heating devices to prevent burns and injuries.”

City readiness and how to get help

Mulaudzi said the City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services units will be monitoring all seven regions for incidents during the cold spell. For life-threatening emergencies, residents were urged to call the Emergency Management Services Command and Control Centre on 011 375 5911.

Stay prepared

  • Expect wet, windy weather alongside colder temperatures through the weekend.
  • Use heating devices in well-ventilated areas and never leave heaters, braziers or candles unattended.
  • Keep young children away from heating devices to prevent burns and injuries.

The cold front is expected to affect most parts of Johannesburg as the province contends with winter conditions.
