Police have arrested a 20-year-old after the discovery of a charred body in the back of a panel van near a mine shaft in Orkney, North West. Security guards found the burnt-out vehicle and human remains on Wednesday morning at Shaft 6, prompting an investigation that has so far led officers to a nearby house and a local hospital.

Discovery and preliminary findings

Security personnel alerted police after finding a burnt-out panel van in a field close to a mine shaft. Officers located human remains in the vehicle’s flatbed. Preliminary investigations suggested the victim had been killed before being moved.

Blood leads and items recovered

Police traced the vehicle to an address in Orkney. They reported that the house was locked and that blood stains were observed on the driveway, leading to the neighbour’s house. Investigators entered the unlocked neighbouring property and found a suspected murder weapon, the deceased’s cellphone and other items belonging to the victim.

Arrest and charges

Police later confirmed the body was that of a 71-year-old man. A 20-year-old suspect was traced to a local hospital, where he was arrested and placed under police guard. The case is being investigated by police in Orkney as murder and defeating the ends of justice, Saps stated.

What authorities have said

“Preliminary investigation on the vehicle led investigators to an address in Orkney wherein they could not gain immediate access to the house as it was locked. Blood stains were observed on the driveway, leading to the neighbour’s house,” North West South African Police Service (Saps) stated.

The arrest follows police enquiries at the scene and at locations linked to the vehicle. Further investigative steps were not detailed in the statement from Saps.
