Azteca agony: Bafana Bafana beaten 2-0 by Mexico in World Cup opener

Bafana Bafana suffered a 2-0 defeat to co-hosts Mexico in the 2026 FIFA World Cup opener at Estadio Azteca, with Julián Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez on the scoresheet and South Africa reduced by two straight red cards.

Early blow and a hostile Azteca

The match turned against South Africa within the opening 10 minutes when a mistake in possession allowed Quiñones to dispossess Sphephelo Sithole and score in the ninth minute. The home crowd had created a hostile atmosphere from the warm-up and booed the visitors throughout.

Goalkeeper error, missed chances and half-time hope

Ronwen Williams made an important save from Jiménez early on but also conceded the turnover that led to the first goal. South Africa managed a period of possession without creating clear chances in the final third, and went into the break still trailing after Williams parried another dangerous Jiménez effort and Quiñones struck the upright before half-time.

Second-half collapse and red cards

Early in the second half, as the last defender, Sphephelo Sithole fouled Filgado Alvaro when the Mexican attacker was through on goal; the referee showed Sithole a straight red card. Later, Jiménez headed Mexico’s second in the 67th minute.

The match ended with further dismissals: Themba Zwane received a straight red card for clipping his marker, and Montes was also sent off after tripping Khuliso Mudau.

What this means for Bafana

Competing in only their fourth World Cup, Bafana Bafana now face two remaining group matches against Czechia and South Korea. The team must avoid mistakes and maintain discipline if they are to remain in contention for qualification to the knockout stage.
