City Power schedules maintenance, warns Joburg areas of outages this week

Residents and businesses across Johannesburg should expect a planned power interruption this week as City Power carries out maintenance at the Randjespark substation in Midrand.

What City Power said

City Power issued an alert on Monday notifying affected customers that scheduled maintenance will take place on Thursday, 18 June 2026. Spokesperson Isaac Mangena said the work is part of the utility’s commitment to keeping the grid stable.

Why the interruptions are happening

According to City Power, the interruptions are needed to service ageing infrastructure, identify and replace faulty equipment and reduce the risk of larger, unplanned outages. Mangena said these proactive activities are particularly important during winter when demand on the network increases.

“Planned maintenance is critical in ensuring that ageing infrastructure is serviced, faulty equipment is identified and replaced, and the risk of unplanned outages is reduced,”

“These activities also help protect the network during periods of increased demand, particularly during the winter season when colder weather places additional pressure on electricity infrastructure,”

Midrand interruption: Randjespark substation

The interruption is scheduled for Thursday, 18 June 2026. Maintenance at the Randjespark Substation will take place from 9am to 5pm and will affect the Midrand SDC area, including:

  • Gazelle Road
  • Lechwe Road
  • Reedbuck Crescent
  • Roux Crescent
  • Bushbuck Close
  • Cooperate Park North

Mangena urged affected residents to take precautions and to treat all electrical supply points as live at all times during the interruption period because power may be restored earlier than anticipated.

“Customers are advised to treat all electrical supply points as live at all times during the interruption period, as power supply may be restored earlier than anticipated,”

He also encouraged customers to unplug appliances before and during the outage to avoid possible damage when supply is restored.
