Minister Chikunga rejects online claims, says she is a ‘born-and-bred South African’
The Minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Lydia Sindisiwe Chikunga, has rejected social media claims that she is not a South African citizen, calling the campaign “malicious and orchestrated”.
Ministry issues statement denying allegations
In a statement issued on Thursday, 2 July, Chikunga’s ministry described the online allegations as defamatory, politically motivated and intended to undermine public trust in democratic institutions. The ministry emphasised that Chikunga “is, and has always been, a born-and-bred South African citizen” and noted that she is married to a South African spouse.
Call to reject disinformation
The ministry warned against the spread of misinformation and identity-based attacks, saying such conduct is aimed at misleading the public and sowing division. It urged South Africans to treat information on digital platforms with caution and to avoid amplifying unverified claims that erode social cohesion and constitutional values.
Minister’s defence of democratic values
Chikunga stressed the importance of honest public debate grounded in respect for rights and dignity. The statement included this passage:
“As a country founded on the values of human dignity, equality, non-racialism and the rule of law, we must reject the weaponisation of misinformation, disinformation and identity-based attacks for political or personal gain.”
The minister’s office said she remains committed to her constitutional duties and will not be diverted by smear campaigns that aim to diminish her record in public service or her work to advance the rights of women, youth and persons with disabilities.
Legal and civic reminder
The ministry reminded the public that freedom of expression does not cover defamation, malicious falsehoods or conduct that violates others’ rights and dignity, and called on those spreading false information to stop. It said Chikunga remains focused on the priorities of the Seventh Administration and on building an inclusive, united South Africa grounded in equality, justice and opportunity for all.
