Man arrested after police seize R1.9m in illicit cigarettes in Acornhoek
Police in Mpumalanga arrested a 45-year-old man on July 15, 2026, after intercepting a truck in Acornhoek and seizing illicit cigarettes with an estimated street value of R1.9 million. The arrest followed an operation based on information about the vehicle’s load and route.
Interception and seizure
Mpumalanga police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo said officers acted on intelligence that a truck was transporting illicit goods from Musina to White River. A multidisciplinary law enforcement team intercepted and searched the vehicle in Acornhoek and uncovered a large quantity of suspected illicit cigarettes, which were confiscated.
Charges and next steps
The driver described in police reports as a 45-year-old man was arrested and is expected to appear in the Mhala Magistrate’s Court on charges relating to the possession of illicit cigarettes. Police investigations remain ongoing and further arrests have not been ruled out, Masondo said.
Wider enforcement activity
The seizure in Acornhoek forms part of a broader clampdown on cigarette smuggling and illicit tobacco in the region, where law enforcement units have reported multiple similar interceptions in recent months.
